The rise of the French ensemble Quatuor Ébène began
with an outstanding victory at the ARD Music Competition in 2004. In addition
to traditional repertoire from Joseph Haydn to Béla Bartók, the string quartet
repeatedly dips into other styles. Improvising on jazz standards and pop songs
began in 1999 as a diversionary exercise for four young musicians in the
rehearsal rooms of the university. Eventually, it became one of their
trademarks - the starting signal for their great passion for sound research.
With »Waves«, the ensemble brings a new project to European stages. Together
with electronic sound artist Xavier Tribolet, they pave the way for unusual
connections. To this end, they break, overlap and combine the timbres of their
Stradivaris with synthesized vibrations. Inspired by Gabriel Fauré, Olivier
Messiaen and Arvo Pärt through to Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington, the
atmospheric creations and rhythms sometimes even make the vocal chords vibrate
